1. The role

Our client, a leading multinational in sustainable agri-business, seeks a dynamic Carbon Accountant to drive innovation in carbon accountability across global agricultural operations. This role, based in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial setting, offers the unique flexibility for the successful candidate to shape the exact focus and scope of their impact. While a foundational focus on carbon modeling, data analysis, and uncertainty quantification is central to the role, the path forward is highly adaptable—tailored by the professional’s passion and insight.

Whether you are drawn to rice projects in Southeast Asia, wish to delve into cotton sustainability initiatives in Brazil, or have an idea for an app that empowers farmers in Chad to measure on-ground carbon levels, this position allows you to create meaningful, practical solutions. The role requires a blend of strong quantitative expertise and the capability to translate complex carbon data into actionable insights that drive sustainable value for both the business and its customers. The successful Carbon Accountant will leverage their technical and analytical skills to generate impactful initiatives, making their mark within a supportive yet fast-evolving multinational environment.

2. Results

  • Data Handling & Analysis: Analyze diverse datasets, refining methods to optimize carbon footprinting across a variety of agricultural processes. Employ advanced models and straightforward formulas (e.g., value multiplied by emission factor) to address carbon impact with precision and clarity.

  • Soil Carbon Focus: Lead in quantifying soil carbon by implementing biogeochemical models and addressing both statistical and biogeochemical uncertainties, essential for accurate, repeatable soil carbon measurements.

  • Modeling & Uncertainty Management: Engage with biogeochemical models, balancing statistical rigor with practical usability to quantify uncertainties. Design methodologies that prioritize both technical accuracy and operational feasibility.

  • Creative Problem-Solving: Approach varied challenges, from detailed carbon accounting to adaptable solution-building. Tackle both complex equations and simple calculations with a strategic, solution-oriented mindset.

3. Competencies

  • Educational Background: Master’s degree in environmental analytics, data science, or a related quantitative field is preferred.
  • Experience: At least five years in roles involving LCA (Life Cycle Analysis), carbon footprinting, or carbon accounting, with a record of applying large datasets in practical scenarios.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with environmental standards (Greenhouse Gas Protocol, SBTi, Verra) and GIS tools.
  • Analytical Skills: Proven skills in data analytics, including uncertainty quantification and model development within sustainable agriculture.
